CCNZ made a submission to Statistics New Zealand on industry classification codes, calling for better relation to the work people do and highlighting where the codes can be misleading for decisionmakers.
The codes are currently often task-based, rather than explaining the roles people actually do, yet the information provided to government decision makers is heavily based on these codes.
The submission called for more transparency, better relation of the codes to the work people actually do, and more detailled requirements about how the data is explained when it is used.
It made the following key points:
- Decision making is presently based on misrepresented statistics
- Roles should be based on activities, rather than tasks
- The appropriate caveats for data are not being presented when data is used
- The descriptions currently used to classify the construction industry are not fit for purpose
